IADB 79th Anniversary

The Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) was created in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Third Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 21 American Republics that made up the Pan American Union. Thus, on March 30, 1942, the IADB held its inaugural session.

As this landmark date for the history of the American continent approached, on March 23, Ordinary Meeting No. 1430 was held virtually with the sole purpose of commemorating the 79th Anniversary of the oldest Multilateral Defense Organization in the world.

During the activity, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Luis Almagro Lemes, highlighted the IADB’s ongoing advice to the OAS and its ongoing contribution to strengthening democratic institutions.

The President of the OAS Committee on Hemispheric Security, Ambassador Rita Claverie Dias de Scioli, spoke about the historical evolution of the IADB and its contribution to combating new threats, among others.

General Jorge Armando de Almeida Ribeiro, Chairman of the Council of Delegates from July 2006 to June 2007, underscored the work of the IADB for inter-American integration.

And the current Chairman of the Council of Delegates, Lieutenant General Luciano José Penna, highlighted the technical work carried out by the member countries, both military and civilian, who dedicate their time to the Casa do Soldado, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening democracy on the American continent.

In addition to these personalities, several former IADB Leadership members, Ambassadors of OAS member countries, Coordinators of Regional Groups of the Americas, members of American Conferences, Delegates of IADB member countries, among others, also participated in the event.
