IADB to conduct exercise to design and validate Mechanism for Cooperation on Disasters (MECODE)

The General Secretariat of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), in coordination with the Pro-Tempore Secretariat of the Conference of Ministers of Defense of the Americas (CDMA), carries out the planning and conducting simulated exercise of validating the Mechanism for Cooperation on Disasters (MECODE) design.

This event aims to give continuity to the fulfillment of the Santiago Declaration of December 2nd, 2020, fruit of the last conference of ministers held in Chile last year, which states the creation of MECODE and ratifies the IADB as the permanent secretariat of this mechanism to CMDA, as provided in the report proposed by the Ad Hoc Working Group “Cooperation in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HA/DR)” of the referred conference.

In accordance with the objective of “supporting the Mechanism for Cooperation on Disasters of the Conference of Ministers of Defense of the Americas (MECODE/CMDA) as a means of facilitating current and reliable information on existing disaster response capacities in the region and ensuring that the information is accessible in the database of the OAS Inter-American Network for Disaster Mitigation for the benefit of all Member States, for agencies and the natural disaster community” provided for in the Declaration of Santiago, the IADB will conduct a simulated exercise in the first bimester of 2022 (MECODE Exercise – MECODEX), with the participation of member countries of the CMDA, as well as existing regional and sub-regional bodies and disaster cooperation systems, in order to design and test processes, identify any obstacles and propose recommendations for the permanent validation of MECODE.
