* Costa Rica is the first country within the demining program of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) and Organization of American States (OAS) to be declared free of landmines. Since 1996 the OAS and the IADB?s team of international supervisors and military trainers that comprise the Assistance Mission for Mine Clearance in Central American (MARMINCA) have been assisting Costa Rican deminers in removing landmines and unexploded ordnance from its northern border with Nicaragua. Since the establishment of the program 341 landmines and unexploded ordnance where destroyed returning approximately 131, 903 square meters of land to the people of Costa Rica. Costa Rica stands as a monument to demining efforts being undertaken in other areas throughout the hemisphere.
