Overview

The Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) is an international defense and security organization that promotes cooperative security interests in the Western Hemisphere. The Board's work on such issues as humanitarian demining, Disaster Assistance and confidence building measures directly supports the hemispheric security goals of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Ministers of Defense. The Board also provides a senior-level academic program in security studies for military, national police and civilian leaders at the Inter-American Defense College (IADC).

The Board's international defense and security committee, the Council of Delegates, meets monthly to review programs and manage Board activities via sub-committees and temporary commissions. Program requirements are approved under the "one-nation, one-vote" majority rule concept. The IADB builds confidence and trust through cooperation and partnership on a daily basis. It is a unique model to strengthen multilateral military cooperation and enhance civil-military relations.

All OAS member nations are eligible to join the IADB. The Council of Delegates is an international defense and security committee representing the interests of the 34-nations of the OAS. Each nation determines if it will designate a military officer or civilian equivalent to attend meetings and exercise their nation's right to vote on Board activities. These officers may also perform co-duties as their Embassy's attaché, military assistant, or in a civilian position dealing with security issues.

International military members come from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. The IADB's major sections include: an international committee of general/ admiral-level officers (or civilian equivalent) for decision making; an international military staff for program management; an international College faculty and administration, and an international secretariat for logistics and translation services.

The Board and College operate in the official languages of Spanish, Portuguese and English.
