On April 2, the IADB hosted a visit from the “Pan American Union of Armed Forces Reserve Officers” (UPORFA), represented by its President, US Army Brigadier General (Retired) FERNANDO FERNANDEZ and US Army Major General (Retired) ROBERT W. SMITH III, Head of the US Delegation at UPORFA.
The purpose of the visit was to present to the IADB the efforts of UPORFA to promote the importance of democratic values while educating the nations of the Western Hemisphere about the value of using veterans in support of their armed forces.
Regarding its mission, UPORFA is tasked with disseminating knowledge about the foundations of a democratic society in which the Army is subordinated to freely chosen civilian authorities and at the same time providing advice and guidance in the development of reserve officers and their organizations.
This effort was mainly promoted through its member countries and observers, such as Argentina, Colombia, Peru, the United States, Canada and Chile, which are also represented on the Inter-American Defense Board.
During the meeting, the President of UPORFA awarded the Major General (Mexican Army) LUIS RODRÍGUEZ BUCIO, President of the Inter-American Defense Board, an acknowledgment and the badge of the Pan American Union of Reserve Officers of the Armed Forces, in the “Honorary” degree, in recognition for his dedication and efforts to fulfill its leadership position in the IADB.
Through such important approaches, the IADB reaffirms its commitment to its member states and collaborating organizations to provide technical, advisory, and educational services on topics related to military and defense issues in the Hemisphere, in order to contribute to the fulfillment of the Charter of the OAS.
