On February 7, 2019, the Chairman of the Council of Delegates of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), Major General Luis Rodríguez Bucio, presented the topic “the IADB’s efforts to increase regional capacities in response to natural disasters.” This presentation took place at the Seminar on Complex Emergencies and Large Scale Disasters at the Inter-American Defense College (IADC).
The workshop focused on complex, man-made and large-scale natural emergencies focusing on national preparedness, mitigation and response. The types of emergencies and disasters that have been addressed have included large-scale terrorist attacks as well as natural, biological and technological disasters. This seminar emphasized national and international forces and agencies responsible for highlighting the need for greater synergistic national and regional integration and coordination in the planning and management of emergencies and disasters in the Western Hemisphere. The event brought together experts, professionals and policy makers in disaster risk management and regional security, with the participation of military, police, foreign service members, civil defense, security and officials from the Ministry of Emergencies and Disasters.
Through such events, the IADB organs promote and strengthen activities of technical, advisory and educational services to the Organization of American States (OAS) and its Member States, through the dissemination of knowledge and experiences among leaders and advisors the various nations of the Americas on matters related to defense and security in the Hemisphere. In this way, the promotion and strengthening of hemispheric security and confidence is achieved without losing focus on regional cooperation and cooperation in the face of common threats such as large-scale emergencies and disasters.
